Think of words like responsibility and love. The father feels he has a responsibility to the son to get him to the sea. The son represents hope - hope for the future. The son loves his father deeply, and despite the difficult conditions, the father has done a wonderful job raising him - he is compassionate, respectful, kind. Things that will be needed in the future.

SPOILER - The father knows he isn’t going to make it, but he has hope that his son will and it is his responsibility to take care of him for as long as he can. You will notice that there are places where McCarthy describes little things like grass returning to the earth. HIs father has hope for the human race and he believes his son is a part of it. Pax-C
